Abstract
Upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is associated with Lynch syndrome, an autosomal dominant disorder that increases the risk of many types of cancer such as colorectal cancer and gastric cancer. However, this syndrome is not popular among urologists and the characteristics of hereditary UTUC are currently poorly identified. Thus, we have evaluated Japanese UTUC patients at risk for Lynch syndrome based on revised Bethesda criteria. We found that 29% of UTUC patients satisfied at least one of the criteria, suggesting the possibility of Lynch syndrome. Greater awareness of this high probability of underlying Lynch syndrome could yield clinical benefits for both UTUC patients and their family members. Therefore, we have been carrying educational activities at both domestic and international urological society including the annual meeting of American Urological Association so that Lynch syndrome should gain recognition among urologists.
